What Is a Dumbwaiter?

A dumbwaiter is a compact elevator system designed for transporting food, beverages, and light materials between floors in facilities such as restaurants, hotels, hospitals, dormitories, and factories. Not suitable for passenger transport, these elevators typically have a carrying capacity between 50 kg and 300 kg. They are widely used in commercial establishments across Istanbul and Turkey, and increasingly exported to international markets.

Dumbwaiter Types

Electric Dumbwaiter

The most common type, operating with an electric motor via steel rope or belt drive. It can serve between 2 and 6 stops with a speed typically ranging from 0.3 to 0.5 meters per second.

Hydraulic Dumbwaiter

Operating with a hydraulic piston, this type is preferred for heavier loads. Used at capacities up to 300 kg, it stands out with its particularly quiet operation characteristics.
